In my reporting, I've highlighted a variety of diverse voices that show how no community, despite appearances, is a monolith. I will continue to be committed to highlighting less covered perspectives as I transition into my third year of high school journalism.
Diversity in Mountain Biking: On The Trail with Redwood Mountain Biking
When you think of a mountain biker, you probably think of a scraggly, busted up man, and that stereotype isn't entirely unwarranted. Statistics vary, but most publications, like BETD, claim that more than 75% of mountain bikers are male. This male dominance means women are often left out of the Mountain Biking conversation. In my video, I challenged that reality. Two out of three of my sources were women, and their commentary made up the vast majority of the videos runtime, allowing an often overlooked perspective in the sport to shine bright.Â
Diversity in the Marin community: From Freedom to fear-How deportations are changing the lives of Bay Area immigrants
Marin County is about as far from diverse as a community can get. With more than 65% of residents being white---almost twice the state average---members of minority communities are vastly underrepresented. As a member of the press, I feel I have a responsibility to help solve this issue, and I felt it was fulfilled in this story. I made a sustained effort to highlight the voices of latino immigrants on the issue of deportations, reaching out to both legal and undocumented sources and eventually interviewing a Dreamer under Obama's DACA program whose voice forms the bulk of the article.Â
